How Can You Diagnose PCOS?

Tests, Symptoms & When to Get Help (from a Doctor or a Nutritionist)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) can feel confusing and frustrating. You might experience irregular periods, unexplained weight gain, or stubborn acne — and wonder, “Is this PCOS?”

The truth is: PCOS is a complex hormonal condition, and diagnosing it requires a blend of symptom-checking, lab tests, and the right guidance.

Let’s break it down.

🔍 Common Symptoms of PCOS You Shouldn’t Ignore:

  • Irregular or missed periods

  • Acne (especially jawline/chin)

  • Weight gain (particularly around the belly)

  • Hair thinning or hair fall

  • Excess facial/body hair

  • Mood swings or anxiety

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Difficulty conceiving

  • Bloating or digestion issues

If you have 2 or more of these consistently, it’s worth getting evaluated.

🧪 Key Tests to Diagnose PCOS

Your doctor may recommend a combination of:

1. Blood Tests:

To check hormone levels such as:

  • LH & FSH (ovulation hormones)

  • Testosterone / Androgens (often elevated in PCOS)

  • Insulin / Fasting Glucose (for insulin resistance)

  • Thyroid profile (to rule out hypothyroidism)

  • Prolactin (to rule out other conditions)

  • AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) – can be high in PCOS

2. Pelvic Ultrasound:

To check if there are multiple follicles (small cysts) in your ovaries.Note: You don’t need cysts to be diagnosed with PCOS. You can still have it based on symptoms + bloodwork.

👩‍⚕️ When Should You See a Doctor?

👉 If your cycles are longer than 35 days consistently👉 If you’ve missed 3+ periods in a year👉 If you’ve been trying to conceive for 6 months or more👉 If you're gaining weight despite eating well👉 If acne or facial hair suddenly worsens

A gynecologist or endocrinologist can help confirm the diagnosis with the right medical tests.
